Quote:
14.05.2008 - Abgewürgt: "Speed Racer" floppt in Deutschland

14.05.2008 - Speed Racer: Deutschland-Flop in historischen Dimensionen

Quote:
08-05-12 Speed Racer's Box Office Flop Explained : REVIEW

By Josh Tyler

Thefinal numbers aren't in yet, but it doesn't matter. Speed Racer isofficially a tremendous flop. Early estimates indicate that it onlymade $20 million opening weekend, and even that as it turns out, may begenerous. By way of comparison, Iron Man made $100 million its openingweekend, and $50 million this weekend. Those are the kinds of numbersyou expect from a summer blockbuster people actually want to see.

Overthe next days and weeks as Speed Racer quietly slips out of theaters, there's going to be a lot of talk as experts point fingers and try tofigure out what the hell went wrong. However to me, the answer seemsobvious.

Speed Racer is first and foremost a kids' movie. That should have worked for it. It's been months since we've had aneven halfway exciting kids' movie, and usually when that happens thenext one to show up in theaters makes a mint. Speed Racer had the jumpon all the other summer children's films. It was the first. It shouldhave been sold out with Mom's dragging hordes of pre-teens in to seethe Wachowski brothers' brightly colored racing movie.

Except whoops. They forgot to tell parents that this was a kids' movie.

Surethe trailers had a lot of bright colors and vroom vroom noises, but itwas never entirely clear that this was a movie for kids. Most of theads touted that it was the latest from the creators of The Matrix, aseries of films known for being R-rated and violent. Others wereattached to corporate sponsorships for boring, adult things likeinsurance. Few of the most heavily used advertisements were clearlygeared towards youngsters. Instead, nearly all of the trailers and TVspots seemed to be struggling to strike a confused middle ground, in aweird attempt to appeal to everyone, while all they really accomplishedwas to appeal to absolutely no one.

Warner Brothers neverquite caught on to the fact that adults were not going to be interestedin this thing, no matter how they advertised it. Maybe theirresearchers spent too much time on fanboy sites like the increasinglyout of touch AICN, allowing the niche audience there to convince themthat there was this huge fanbase for Speed Racer, when in fact it's acrappy cartoon which most people barely remember, and of those that dofew think of it all that fondly. Note to Warner Brothers: Harry Knowleslikes a lot of crap. He doesn't really represent the mainstream, hedoesn't even represent the mainstream geek crowd, he represents a tinysubset of people which apparently, are worth about $20 million at thebox office. That's who you got into the theater this past weekend. Thevery small crowd that comprises Speed Racer fans, and a few stragglerswho weren't already totally disillusioned by the way the Wachowskis'ruined The Matrix.

Speed Racer blew it in marketing. Theyneeded to sell this thing solely to pre-teens, and they didn't. Theresult was a movie which adults had no interest in and parents werenever quite sure was meant for their kids. Welcome to flop city SpeedRacer. You had it coming.

Quote:
8 May 2008 - On Speed

Speed Racer is probably going to be a divisive film, with people either getting completely on board or rejecting the film wholesale. It’s just that kind of film, one with such a unique flavor that it renders people incapable of speaking in terms other than “awesome” or “it sucks.” Like with most things in life, however, the truth is probably somewhere in between. Speed Racer is a decidedly mixed experience.

The film is based on the classic Japanese animated series of the same name. Speed Racer is a talented young racing car driver with a promising career. He drives the Mach 5, a car his father, Pops Racer designed. When Speed wins a big race, he catches the attention of big corporate sponsors, who want Speed to cooperate with their interests. Speed quickly learns that the world of racing isn’t as clean as he thought it would be, and he has to fight in order to bring integrity back to the sport he loves.

For a movie that’s practically a cartoon, the story carries some pretty heady themes. Speed Racer isn’t a film where’d you’d expect to witness some pretty obtuse corporate maneuvering, but there it is. It’s kind of a strange fit in the film, making the plot a little more convoluted than it really needs to be. There are some major lulls in this script, mostly when the film finds itself having to spell out some of its more obtuse plot points. Still, the script has its high points, often capturing the unique campy flavor that the original series often brought. It is in these brief glimpses of the past, when the film goes back to its roots that the Speed Racer truly triumphs.

Much will be made of the film’s unique look. The film is flashy and cartoony, forgoing any sense of realism in favor of a highly stylized, highly animated world. The Wachowskis have done much to try to impart a sense of speed in even the most static of scenes. Flashbacks and cutaways are often literally moving, keeping a pretty kinetic pace. This nonstop movement is a double-edged sword for the film. On one hand, it imparts a very distinct feel to the film, and on the other hand, it can make things hard to follow. The racing scenes suffer the most from the aesthetic. The Wachowskis seem content with just throwing everything at the viewer, and while it does make for a couple of cool moments, it undercuts the drama, and hinders any sort of visual storytelling.

The film features some pretty dead-on casting. Emile Hirsch makes for a fine Speed Racer, capturing that optimistic youthfulness that defined the character. Matthew Fox is the perfect choice to play Racer X. It’s almost difficult to tell him apart from his animated counterpart. Cristina Ricci is lovely as Trixie, and John Goodman does a great job as Pops Racer. The cast just brings these cartoon characters to life. The weakest link here is Korean superstar Rain, who fumbles through most of his lines.

It’s pretty difficult to sum up how I feel about Speed Racer. My inner fan is tingling a bit just from the idea of seeing these characters I grew up with on the big screen. But taking a step back reveals a myriad of problems that keep the film from becoming an easy recommendation. The film offers up a great cast, interesting visuals, and boatloads of nostalgia, but it’s hindered by weak storytelling and a couple of dubious filmmaking choices. There’s a hint of a great movie here, but it just doesn’t make it all the way through.

Exciting comers topbill new productions
By Nestor Torre
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:08:00 05/16/2008

MANILA,Philippines—New films coming to our screens confirm the global movieindustry’s shift from big stars to new talents as headliners ofupcoming productions. Leading off, “The Chronicles of Narnia: PrinceCaspian,” fields not one, but five young comers in key roles.

Playingthe film’s title character, Prince Caspian, is the charismatic youngBritish actor, Ben Barnes. How did he clinch the plum role? A castingassistant had seen Barnes in the West End play, “The History Boys,” andarranged for an audition—which the young man passed with flying colors.

Audition

Barnesthen did a personal audition for director Andrew Adamson, who found him“charming, fun and comfortable—he won us over! You could see how muchhe wanted the role.”

That was because, as Barnes confesses, hehad been a “massive Narnia fan since I was a kid.” When he was toldthat he had gotten the part, Barnes looked through his bookshelves “andfound my copy of ‘Prince Caspian’ with a 1989 copyright, when I was 8years old.”

Aside from Barnes, four other relative newcomersplay the Pevensie siblings in the sequel. In the sequel’s story, thePevensies help Prince Caspian reclaim the throne of the kingdom ofNarnia, which has been usurped by his evil uncle.

In the current movie, “Speed Racer,” lead star Emile Hirsch is joined byKorean pop sensation, Rain, in his Hollywood film debut. Rain playsTaejo Togokahn, a top race car driver who teams up with Hirsch’scharacter, Speed Racer, and a mysterious driver known as Racer X(Matthew Fox) to win a death-defying cross-country race called The Crucible.

Great presence

The film’s creative stafftapped Rain to play his significant role, because they saw that he had“great presence onscreen that commands your attention,” as producerJoel Silver puts it.

Rain’s character is compelled to defend hisfamily when it is threatened by the evil Royalton Industries. TheKorean star loved performing in his first Hollywood movie because headmired the Wachowski brothers, the film’s directors, and “its storyabout hopes and dreams is inspiring, particularly to our target audience—the youth.”

Back in Korea, Rain achieved superstar status by way of the 2004 TV drama series, “Full House,” which enjoyed record ratings and was also telecast in other countries. In therecording field, Rain has also done well, with his third album, “It’sRaining,” selling over one million copies in Asia.

Silver and the Wachowski brothers are so happy with Rain’s performance in “SpeedRacer” that they have offered him a followup project, the action film,“Ninja Assassin,” which is currently being shot.

Stellar ascent

Finally,on “21,” British actor Jim Sturgess sustains his stellar ascent, initiated in the recent hits, “Across the Universe” and “The OtherBoleyn Girl.” Director Robert Luketic confidently declares thatSturgess is “on the cusp of a breakthrough as a major star.”

Heattributes the actor’s bright future to his versatility: “He’s bothdramatically spot-on and comedically gifted—which is a rarecombination.”

In “21,” Sturgess plays a shy, brilliant M.I.T.student who, needing to pay tuition, joins schoolmates who head for LasVegas to use their knack for crunching numbers to turn the odds ofblackjack in their favor.

Also playing a significant role in“21” is Fil-Am comer Liza Lapira, who plays Kianna, a key member of thegroup of whiz math students that seeks to break the bank at Las Vegascasinos by counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals.

Lapirafirst made her mark on TV with a recurring role on the Emmyaward-winning show, “Nuff.” She played Maggie del Rosario, OliverPlatt’s long-suffering assistant. She also has recurring roles on “Law& Order: SVU” and “NCIS.”

Her film credits include “Domino,”“Brown Sugar” and “LA Blues.” She will next costar with Jude Law andForest Whitaker in “Repossession Mambo.”

25 May 2008 - InformationTimes-SR crashed at the box office in North America

(Briefly translate the following contents related to Rain)
........
Rain only can help the box office in Asian market.

Speed Racer crashed at the box office in North America.  However, its box office in Korea is number one because of Rain who was born in Korea.  It is Warner Brothers' wise move to have Rain in Speed Racer to open the Asian market.  When Rain went to Hong Kong in April, 2008 for Speed Racer's promotion, he drew huge attention from all kinds of media.  Rain also met lots of his fans in Hong Kong.

However, Rain could not help the box office in North America since Speed Racer is Rain's first Hollywood movie.  Rain is only in the supporting roles in Speed Racer.  But Rain said it was quite fair to be in the supporting roles in Speed Racer: "I has certain well-knownness in Asia. Hollywood is a brand new place for me.  I must be patient to follow the steps."
.........
Regardless of whether the Speed Racer souvenir do open the broad market in USA or not, Rain's Speed Racer souvenir must be hot in Asia market.  Its profit might become one of the main ways to reclaim the cost of Speed Racer.  Therefore, Rain's "pressure" might go far beyond the main casts in Speed Racer. [May-27-2008] Nikkan Sports-Special support shooting SR from Hong Kong fan
Nikkan Sports |Article input 2008.05.22 10:03

Singer rain (26) in which it advances to Hollywood by 'Speed racer' of JES money has received 'Special support fire' from the Hong Kong fan.

The Hong Kong fan club of rain was made a thing that very did Ageafan until June 15 that came as 'The speed racer two degrees or more were seen' moving on opening movie 'Speed racer' recently, collected the seeing tickets of this movie, and produced with the commemoration picture frame and presented it to rain at the end of July.

The notification matter was floated through fan various sites such as non-trees that were fan cafes of rain on the 21st, and it was completed by the picture frame and tickets gathered in each country of Asia are transmitted.

'Speed racer' went out and the fan went out of power to the United States opening to say nothing of the country when fighting hard as stagnation in blockbuster 'Iron man' and comedy thing 'Thing that was able to be caused only by Las Vegas' and stops to the third place in box office, etc. so that it may become a person hardening and 'Speed racer' may help. It is queer for the Hong Kong fan that is not a domestic fan to initiate and to have prepared such an event.

The director of the Hong Kong fan club wanted to do only one present that existed in the world to rain and ..".. planned. If the country and the race were exceeded and the appearance cooperating was shown to rain, it was said "..might be good...

Rain stays at German Berlin recently and is active simultaneously in taking a picture of movie person action thing 'Ninzaoseshin' breathed secondarily with the Woshoski brother with the first leading role work. Rain attends the English acting class and the action map in the locale.
