22 Febrary 2008 - WILL THE WACHOWSKI'S NINJA ASSASSINS BE READING FROM A NINJA SCROLL?

Uh oh, Devin's writing about anime again.

The next film from V For Vendetta director James McTiegue and his producin' buddies the Wachowskis is called Ninja Assassin, but the site Kung Fu Rodeo has gotten their hands on a casting call sheet that indicates the movie might be a disguised version of Ninja Scroll, an anime movie which I intuit is about ninjas.

I have to take the site's word for it, even though it seems like only one name from the casting sheet is mentioned in the Ninja Scroll wiki page, and that name is Jubei, the main character. It should be noted that Jubei is the name of a legendary samurai, so it's quite possible that Ninja Assassin's Jubei is, like the Jubei of Ninja Scroll, an homage. Or possibly Ninja Assassin is about that legendary Jubei, previously played by Sonny Chiba.

In fact, the more I read about Ninja Scroll, the less convinced I am that Ninja Assassin is related. However, thanks to this likely bullshit rumor, I have now read this sentence:

Although he has the clear advantage as Jubei cannot even scratch his stony hide, he begins to fall apart due to the poison received from raping Kagero.

Head to Kung Fu Rodeo for the casting breakdown but take his theories with a grain of salt.

Fans of “Ninja Scroll” will know that the lead in that film, a vagabond swordsman is also named Jubei, although as far as I know, he was never a ninja, but of course they could change that for the movie.

If this is indeed a live-action version of “Ninja Scroll”, here is your plot for the anime from IMDB.com:

A ninja-for-hire is forced into fighting an old nemesis who is bent on overthrowing the Japanese government. His nemesis is also the leader of a group of demons each with superhuman powers.

As I mentioned, Jubei was never really a ninja (or at least, he didn’t dress like one), and it’s one of the best animes I’ve seen, full of insane action, se x, and crazy demon characters. A live-action version of this movie would just be utterly insane if the Wachowskis go full bore. It sure as heck won’t be no “Speed Racer”, that’s for sure.

17 February 2008 - Live Action “Ninja Scroll” In The Works?

Ah, the heady days of the mid-90s, when anime was just coming into it’s own in the States and MTV’s Liquid Television ran bumpers cut from a then-obscure anime titled “Ninja Scroll.” The clips MTV used to lead in and out of their animation show were ridiculously popular, leading first to bootlegged copies of the Scroll hitting cons nationwide, then to an official release which sold amazingly well, I believe setting records as it broke the anime dam wide and titles began to really flood the US market.

(Note: this is all how I remember things happening. Actual facts may vary, but I don’t care. I like my story.)

Well, rumor has it that the Wachowski siblings are working on a live action version of the classic anime, and this casting list that’s popped up is supposedly for the flick. They’re referring to the movie as “Ninja Assassins,” but it’s pretty typical for codenames to be used at this point in a movie’s production. Korean pop-star Rain is already signed to star (and is making an appearance in the Speed Racer movie) and James McTiegue will be directing.

I’m slapping the full list below the fold here, just in case the page gets yanked.

Thanks Lucas!

Photos of Rain training for his role in his next movie, “NinjaAssassin” was released recently. He is seen wearing a singlet, holdingtwo sword props in his hands as he went through sword fightingtechniques. But most importantly, you can see his much talked aboutsignificantly beefed up body

For his role in “Ninja Assassin”,Rain specially hired trainers that trained the cast in “300″ to beef uphis body. He went through more than 10 hours of intense training andstrict diet each day just to sculpt his body as seen in the pictures.

Rainhad revealed in an interview when he was back in Korea recently topromote “Speed Racer” that he was surprised with his bodytransformation, “I have a body that’s difficult to build up musclesactually. But just four months of intense training, I was prettyshocked at the results.”

Rain revealed himself that during hiswork-out period, he has only had a diet consisting of chicken breast, raw fish, sweet potatoes and salad. The work-out lasted for four monthsand saw his body fat level reduce from 12% to only 5%.

“NinjaAssassin” is Rain’s follow-up movie with The Wachowski Brothers after“Speed Racer”. Filming started at the end of April in Germany and isexpected to hit cinemas next year.
