South Korean Heartthrob Rain to Perform in Jakarta
Korean pop icon Jeong Ji Hoon, aka Rain, at a news conference in Jakarta on Tuesday. He is scheduled to perform at a concert in the Indonesian capital on Thursday. (Photo: Rosa Panggabean, Antara)
He goes by the name of Rain, and he is one of the hottest stars Asia currently has to offer — a singer, actor, dancer, designer, model and style icon all at once.
The celebrity status of Jeong Ji Hoon, better known as Rain, was more than obvious during a news conference at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Kuningan on Tuesday afternoon, where the South Korean entertainer was scheduled to appear and talk about tonight’s concert in Jakarta, part of an Asian tour that has already taken him to Seoul, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
The ballroom was filled with the excited chattering of mostly female reporters who discussed Rain’s music and his new movie, “Ninja Assassin,” which is currently playing in local theaters. A large poster depicting Rain wearing an unbuttoned black jacket that revealed his six-pack abs dominated the ballroom, and had to serve as eye candy for most of the afternoon, as the star took his time to appear in front of the media.
After a wait of more than an hour, a female MC finally stepped up to the podium, giggling like a schoolgirl as she announced that she would love to wear clothes from Rain’s fashion line, and then rattled off the entertainer’s CV, adding “that’s pretty cool, isn’t it?” at the end of almost every sentence.
Then, finally: enter Rain. The reporters who grabbed seats at the back were the unfortunate losers, as they had to get out of their seats so they could rush to the front for a better view of the 27-year-old star.
Dressed in an elegant suit and sporting a trendy hairstyle, Rain stood still for a couple of minutes, enduring the flurry of camera flashes with a boyish smile, before sitting down to answer questions.
It took a while before anybody asked anything, as most of the women in the room were still trying to deal with the fact that he was actually sitting in front of them – “Oh my God, I can’t believe he’s so close,” was the most heard exclamation of the day.
It didn’t get any better when the heartthrob said, with a low, soft voice: “Hello everybody. This is Rain. I am so happy to be here. Apa kabar?” Those few words were enough to fill the room with heart-wrenching sighs and numerous “aaaahs” and “ooooohs.”
Rain released his first album in 2002 to great success and, almost at the same time, started an acting career. He has recorded five Korean albums and one in Japanese, and has starred in several TV series, as well as three feature films.
Many questions centered on his role in “Ninja Assassin” — and yes, he worked out on a daily basis and followed a tight program to get in shape, and yes, of course, he’d liked to keep that condition, but wasn’t quite able to after the movie wrapped. Then Rain, who starred in the popular South Korean TV drama “Full House” in 2004, which was a big hit in Indonesia, eventually had the chance to talk about his concert.
“I came to Indonesia to give the best possible performance to my fans,” he said, politely and appearing almost shy. “It took me one year to prepare this tour, so I am sure you won’t be disappointed.”
He assured the crowd that he would do his very best to entertain and that he felt very blessed to be in Indonesia, and to have a successful career as both a singer and actor.
The concert tonight in Jakarta is the last stop on his Asian tour and as of Wednesday there were only standing room tickets still available.
“We had planned to bring Rain to Indonesia since last year,” said Sean Sudwikatmono, the managing director of promoter W Productions.
“But he was still busy shooting ‘Ninja Assassin’ at the time, so we had to wait until now, and of course we’re very happy to have him here.”
If Wednesday’s news conference was any indication of how the concert might be, expect a loud, smitten crowd, consisting mainly of female fans, and a focused Rain, eager to entertain and performing songs from his new album as well as favorites from previous ones, and smiling relentlessly to make the girls’ hearts race.

South Korean Heartthrob Rain Sends Indonesian Fans Into a Frenzy
Deafening screams from thousands of dolled-up teenage girls rocked a North Jakarta auditorium as South Korean pop sensation Rain opened his first Indonesian concert with the hit song, “My Way.”
Backed by a small army of gyrating dancers, Rain gave a hypnotic performance, even if the songs were almost all in Korean.
Every move sent a charge through an audience eager to scream. Some fell into a frenzy when Rain removed his sunglasses for his second song, “Touch Ya.”
When he took off his jacket for his third song, “It’s Raining,” many in the crowd started chanting his full name, Jeong Ji-hoon.
Rain’s appearance renewed hope that Jakarta may once again be on the map for touring superstars. Several international artists have canceled scheduled concerts here over fears of terrorism and concerns about security.
R&B sensation Rihanna backed away from a live show earlier this year. Legendary US band Chicago and hip-hop group NERD also canceled shows.
None of that was on the mind of Umi, 17, on Thursday night. Wearing a jilbab, the teenager began weeping as Rain, who has recorded five best-selling albums in South Korea and whose appeal has swept most of Asia, opened his mouth to sing.
“I really love him. I love his music. He is the perfect idol,” said Umi, who attended the concert with four friends. She said they had been saving money for tickets since August, when they first heard that Rain was coming to Jakarta.
Three other young women at the concert confessed that the handsome Asian heartthrob, who has starred in several TV series and three movies, including the current “Ninja Assassin,” had captured their imaginations with his looks and dancing skills.
“I like his six-pack abs and he is good looking,” Fiki Biaston said.
One of her friends, Cherry, said she loved just looking at Rain.
“We are here because we want to see him dance,” Cherry said.
Another earnest fan, Michelle, said she also admired Rain’s body, but was at the concert to hear him sing.
She also attended the concert with friends, all of whom were female, like the vast majority of the audience.

| Quote: | 28 Nov 2009 - The Rain phenomena to take over Jakarta
December will begin with an Asian flavor for concert goers, as Korean superstar Rain is coming to town for what is promised to be a spectacular concert.
Yes, music lovers – or more precisely, K-Pop enthusiasts – book in Dec. 3 for the concert. We’re talking about the phenomenal Jeong “Rain” Ji-hoon. There are many reasons to see this show. The first reason, well, as mentioned above, it’s going to be spectacular.
“There will be no lip-synching,” promises managing director of promoter W Productions Sean Sudwikatmono. “It won’t be like some regular concerts.”
And no lip-synching is not the only thing. A two-storey stage measuring 20 times 40 meters, along with giant twin LCD monitors and sophisticated lighting from Korea, promise the audience a great concert. There will also be a water fountain for a unique effect.
“The concert will run for some 2.5 hours – it’s quite long,” Sean says, hinting that fans won’t be disappointed.
Furthermore, he says, there will be no supporting acts. The concert is focused on the 27-year-old entertainer, who rocketed to international fame after starring in the Korean TV series, Full House, in 2004.
“Full House was also very popular in Indonesia, as Rain was.”
“That’s why we decided to bring him to Jakarta,” says Sean, whose company has already brought Taiwanese girl band S.H.E and R&B star David Tao to Jakarta. Besides, he says, “Korean culture is booming in Indonesia.”
So, that’s another reason for you to enjoy the show. After all, what better way is there to experience “Korean fever” than enjoy a Korean superstar perform live?
According to Sean, Jakarta is the only city in Southeast Asia that Rain will visit on his 2009 Asian tour titled, “Legend of Rainism.” Before he arrives in Jakarta, Rain will perform in Seoul, Hong Kong and Japan.
“Rain has performed in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam,” Sean explains. “But he has never been to Jakarta.”
So, Rain choosing Indonesia as the only country in Southeast Asia he will perform is perhaps another reason to come.
According to Sean, Rain will sing around 20 songs at the concert, which will take place at the Jakarta International Convention Exhibition, Mangga Dua Square, in North Jakarta.
However, he declines to reveal the number of tickets available for sale.
Sean says his company expects audience members aged 15-55 years old from Indonesia and abroad, as Rain has many loyal fans in Korea, Japan and Singapore who attend his concerts.
Rain, who is listed in the TIME Magazine as “The People Who Shape Our World” in 2006, has released five albums in Korea and one in Japan.
Within the next few months, Rain, who is also one of the “Most Beautiful People” according to PEOPLE Magazine in 2007, will expand his career by starring in upcoming movie Ninja Assassin to be screened worldwide.
Are you interested in enjoying this Korean phenomenon?
Festival tickets cost Rp 750,000 or you can pay Rp 1.5 million for a Gold ticket. If you want the best seat and view, the Rp 2 million Platinum ticket, or VIP ticket, costs Rp 3 million.

| Quote: | 4 Dec 2009 - Rain takes his act to Indonesia
Rain is in the forecast today for Indonesia as the “Legend of Rainism” tour presented by the top Korean singer sweeps into the Jakarta International Event & Convention Centre.
The world tour is Rain’s third following “Rainy Day” (2005-06) and “Rain’s Coming” (2006-07).
It began on Aug. 28 in Japan and continued with performances in Korea in October and in Hong Kong in November.
The Hong Kong show attracted over 10,000 people, including top Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Jackie Chan. It was held at the Asia-World Expo, the largest exhibition venue in Hong Kong.
As an indication of Rain’s popularity in Jakarta, the cheapest tickets sold for 750,000 rupiahs ($80) which is about $15 below the average monthly salary in Indonesia, the same price as tickets for recent concerts in that country by international pop stars Beyonce and Linkin Park.
Rain’s next destination after Indonesia will be the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Dec. 24 and 25.
