SouthKorean "Son of Heaven" Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) has been in the scene for 6years, stealing the hearts of tens of thousands of young girls in Asia.Last year, he laid aside the Asian market during its peak of power, andrushed over to film his first Hollywood movie <Speed Racer>. Henot only willingly took on the supporting role, but in the movie healso dressed up as a woman. His ability to put himself aside to act inthis movie, is all because of the directors of <The Matrix>, theWachowski Brothers. For his first Hollywood movie, Rain gives himselfthe perfect score of 100.
Last week, Rain swept through HongKong for 3 days for his first Hollywood movie. He has recently beenbusy filming another Hollywood movie and he looked like he had lost alot of weight. Rain, who always had special sentiments for Hong Kong, was under the protection of more than 10 bodyguards; acceptinginterviews from reporters all around Asia at the Peninsula Hotel. In<Speed Racer>, apart from race car driving and the showing off ofmuscles, Rain also played an out-of-character role of a woman. Whenasked how he felt at that time? He was not bashful when he said that hegreatly approved his legs.
"The scene of playing the role of awoman is very much unforgettable. At first I was worried that the partof me disguising as a woman would not turn out great, but after puttingon white 'coveralls' (not sure what this means) and seeing myselfmade-up as a woman, I discovered that even my legs looked good." Sincethis is his first Hollywood movie, how would Rain rate himself? "Eachtime I work I put forth 100% of my effort, so for every single time Iachieve the same, and this is no exception."
LOOKING OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER IN THE MOVIE
Inthe movie, fast-actor Rain puts on thick race car driver clothes, andspeeds quickly through a race course that is filled with surprises, passing through various regions. In reality, during the officialfilming, Rain only simulated his performance in a cab; whenever sittedhe would be in it for more than half an hour at a time, causing himmuch backache. Rain expressed that it was an unforgettable experiencesimulating the scenes of the car race, but what was even moreunforgettable was how the staff were so good to him. "As an Asianactor, I expressed very honestly with the other actors that I am notUS-born, and therefore my spoken English is not necessarily veryfluent, so I hope that everyone will be patient with me. Of courseduring the initial period of filming it was quite difficult, but therewas much help from many of the actors, like from Susan Sarandon whoplays Speed's mom in the movie. We got along really well; not only didwe become very open and honest friends (everything was discussed), Ialso gave her an autographed concert DVD as well as wrote her a letter, thanking her for taking care of me."
PUTTING HIMSELF ASIDE TO LEARN
Filmingthis Hollywood movie is different from his past movie project; his roledoes not come to play until 30 minutes after the start of the movie.Although it is a supporting role, the salary for it is quitesubstantial. And yet after receiving the role, he did not even considerthe question of his pay for it; all he could think of was to startstudying and preparing well for the role.
"Before acceptingthis movie, there were 3, 4 movie invitations for me to take on leadroles, but I declined them. I thought that for my first Hollywoodperformance, taking on the lead role as a start would not beappropriate, By starting off with a supporting role, I can learn firstand adapt slowly thereafter, then consider taking a lead role for mynext work. On the other hand, I really like this fast-paced character.I know that this is based off one of a historical Japanese cartoon, sobasically it doesn't matter too much if it's the lead or supportingrole."
As his first Hollywood work, did Rain not feel any pressure? Is there a difference in movie-making between Hollywood and Korea?
"Thereality is that during the process of filming, there is really not muchdifference between Hollywood and Korea. Everyone is just asenthusiastic. I'd say the only distinction is I will study harder whenI go to a foreign place." But earlier on producer Joel Silver had givenhigh approvals of Rain, he said, "I think that people will be charmedby Rain's performance, he has great attraction on the big screen."After his Hollywood film shoot, are there any intentions to return toSouth Korea to film any movies? "I will be paying attention to scriptsand characters, as long as there is a good role, I will consider."
