2008 Aug Rain's Big Hollywood Risk, pt.1 article from Enter. Shanghai TV Mag

Deb's Note: This is part 1 of an article in the Entertainment Shanghai Television August edition magazine. Many of this are old news because of <SR> but still worth the read. Translation of Part 2 to be continued...

Quote:
2008 August [Entertainment Shanghai Television] Rain's Big Hollywood Risk (Part 1)

*The Distance Between A Boy And A Man*

An innocent face, a killer body. This statement looks like it was meant for Rain. With a body stature standing at 1.84 meters and a desirable boyish face, it’s no wonder that the character of the big star Lee Young-jae in <Full House> was brought to life, including making his jaw-clenching appearances look less fierce, just lovable. Even though such a chauvinistic male always made such childish mistakes, it just left people with a favorable impression.

Usually if a man can simultaneously carry out two or more kinds of contradicting appearances, then that would just make him an extraordinary idol/star, for example the natural hot body Yosuke Kubozuka, or the innocent yet vicious Johnny Depp. What women want, is the kind of person that stands between a boy and a man. Rain takes the two and fuses them both into one in a strange sort of way. He can jump right into the dance for the “3 Little Bears” nursery rhyme, as well as be Asia’s 2nd-to-none dancing king, and at concerts, he wells up audiences till their noses bleed.

When it’s time to be simple he’s simple, when it’s time to be sexy he’s sexy. This is the enchanting power of Rain.

With <Speed Racer> hitting the screens on mainland, it is only because of Rain’s supporting role in it that has made him the biggest promotional image for advertising; in this movie he is the star whom we are most familiar with. But in Hollywood, he chose such a role--a melancholy, talented Asian race car driver called “Taejo”, to meet with audiences for the first time.

Last year Rain’s US concerts were canceled, and presently <Speed Racer> has by no means achieved its anticipated success in the American and European box offices. In actuality, it is not that Rain is unlucky, but it is only because there is not enough time.

*Huge Hollywood Risk* Q&A

Q: In the movie you are a racecar driver, in real life have you ever driven racing cars?
A: I have not driven racing cars in real life, but I am a speed demon. Whenever I’m in the US or Germany, I will drive on my own to get around.

Q: What was the biggest difficulty that you experienced while filming <Speed Racer>?
A: During actual film shooting, speaking in English, for me, was not an easy matter. I have a manager beside me who speaks English, he is a very good study partner. Apart from that having to film a race car sequence in front of the green screen without any other images was very difficult. There were times when the film site would reach temperatures of as high as 40°C, the race car driver’s attire was so thick, I was sweating a lot.

Q: What kind of impression did car racing give you? Besides car racing, what other ‘movements’ do you like?
A: I have not attempted to race cars in real life, but I can use “fantastic”, “thrill” and other terms to describe it. I usually like jogging as well as other activities that require using muscles, sweating after a good workout feels really good.

Q: Were you very nervous when you used English during your audition before your idols the Wachowski Brothers?
A: Because I practiced a lot beforehand, I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be. In fact, I was even more nervous when I filmed my first scene of the movie in front of them.

Q: What your fans are concerned about, is whether you’ll hold your own individual concert or fan meeting here in China in the near future?
A: This year I plan to have a big activity in Asia. Meanwhile we are discussing over an active plan for a music record there. I ask that everyone please look forward to my activities in China.

Q: This movie is a Hollywood production, what do you think are the differences between this and Korean movie making? And after this do you plan to continue forward towards Hollywood or stay in Asia to develop?
A: I think in the aspect of the system of filming, Hollywood has more organizational strength compared to Korean movies, and moreover the treatments given to actors are very good, perhaps this is because there is a larger amount of fund support. But for Korean movies, there is a sense of a big family atmosphere at the film site, after filming you can still get-together very closely with everyone from the drama crew. No matter where it is, as long as there is a good opportunity I will want to be a part of it.

Q: In this international movie production, what did you do when you and other actors of different nationalities communicate? Also please comment on your partners.
A: 80% or more of this movie was done through computer-generated special effects, so the opportunity to work with other actors was few. I’ve always been a fan of Susan Sarandon, so I was always earnestly trying to communicate with her. Matthew Fox also helped a lot with my English lines.

Q: You are now acting in <Ninja Assassin>, can you chat a bit about the kind of preparation you did for this movie?
A: For this movie I’ve had to control the built of my own body in a strict manner, it’s been very difficult. I’ve trained with the fighting stunt team from the movie <300> as well. After which I have also worked to the point where I’m personally satisfied with my own acrobatic fighting levels and stature. This movie is estimated to hit the screens at the beginning of next year.

Q: Which actor has the biggest influence on you? What part of you do you admit that is most like him?
A: When I was young, I was deeply touched by Al Pacino’s performance when I watched him in <Scar face>. I do not dare to say that I’m like him, I just hope to learn his art of acting, and from now on I hope very much for the opportunity to work with him.

08 August [Entertainment Shanghai Television] Rain's Big Hollywood Risk (Part 2)

*Whole Body Dressed As A Woman*

For an entertainer such as Rain to arrive at such a high level of status, there is more or less some sort of determination, and he has also depended on a little bit of luck. Apart from his own hard work, his inner self-consciousness is naturally very important as well. In the past prior to Rain’s debut, his mother passed away, he was therefore determined to become outstanding, using a big house to protect and bring warmth to an incomplete family. As he proceeded to run forward, the objectives that he established for himself gradually turned into history as he achieved each one of them; he only used one year and bought a big house for his father and younger sister. His continues the journey on his path, standing at Asia’s summit, and as he looks forward and beyond, he can see Hollywood.

Choosing <Speed Racer> as his debut stage is not without a reason. There were numerous foreign scripts from before, there were even many of those that were for leading roles. But Rain uses the analogy of American baseball, “Compared to playing the lead in a minor league, I’d rather be a reserved in the major league.” He simply went with the directors—the makers of <The Matrix>, the Wachowski Brothers. Even if it were only for a few minutes of acting a supporting role, it would just be golden. The start that he has given himself is not low, but he hopes that his march into Hollywood will be taken one step at a time.

This role is also what Rain has sincerely strive for. At the time of obtaining an audition, Rain was on tour for his concerts. When he nearly couldn’t take time out of an uninterrupted period of rehearsals, for the sake of the Wachowski’s, he brought along his own drama series, movie DVD, concert CDs and so on and took 15 hours to fly off to Berlin. “If I don’t put in my effort, I’d definitely regret it if this movie becomes very popular.” With this mindset, he eventually got the role. Besides attempting to play a race car driver, there is also a scene where he attempts to play the role of a woman. Rain’s female appearance is probably considered the movie’s biggest humorous moment in Asia. He was originally afraid that the skirt would reveal legs that were not attractive enough, but the end result was very satisfying. (skipping the next statement, not sure how to translate it, something about how Korean men generally have the stature that is just right and they can be creative and pull off dressing up as women…)

Quote:
August 2008 - Rain's Big Hollywood Risk (3rd and Final Part)

*Heart of Patriotism*

When Rain was in Berlin, he'd wake up at 5 am everyday and start filming at 8, continuously busy until night; his sleeping time was only about 5 hours daily. He is diligent in his efforts, but it seems as if the term 'diligent' has become a common adjective for Asian actors in Hollywood. The film site would sometimes reach to a temperature of up to 40 degrees Celsius, wearing his racing suit and covered with heat rash; having to act using English lines also caused him difficulty. But he still cracked up a joke and said that if he knew before that he'd be acting in an English movie, he'd have learned English a long time ago!

"I wanted them to know that Koreans are strong and have great endurance." His hard work was not in vain; even though <Speed Racer>--as far as his acting profession is concerned--was not considered a ground-breaking piece, but this stepping board was appropriately selected because his next step was the Wachowski Brother's new movie <Ninja Assassin> and this time it is truly the leading role. In this movie he takes on the role of a ninja who as an orphan was adopted by a secret ninja clan and brought up to be an assassin. Later on upon witnessing the death of his friend caused by the clan, he revolts and walks the path of revenge. What he is most proud of is that the actor of this character is not a Japanese or a Chinese but just him--Jung Ji-hoon--a Korean entertainer.

The sort of patriotism that Rain has is sensitive and cautious. In Europe and America he has encountered no less of unfortunate events, for example <Time> magazine published the wrong picture of him (Deb's note: Error here, think it was People mag that made the mistake), or that the English media named him as a 'popular Japanese entertainer'. So at the <SR> press conference in Berlin, he indicated in the presence of everyone that he hoped the name "Rain" would not appear in the movie, and he told everyone that he is called Jung Ji-hoon. Rain is the "Son of Heaven" in the Asian music world, whereas Jung Ji-hoon is just a diligent Korean actor.

*A Sense of Childishness*

"Each time prior to a release of a new album, I will go visit my mother. She is my belief." In Rain's heart, the memory of his mother never fades. The last words that she said before she passed away was that she hoped he would take good care of his sister. Whenever he protects his family, he is a man; but whenever he remembers his mother, he is still a child.

If there was a time machine, Rain said he'd like to return to the time when his mother was still alive. Every mid-autumn festival, he will always take special time out and head out bright and early to give offerings to her. Yet on a normal basis, this guy who is always lacking sleep, needs his father to wake him up, and sometimes his eyes are still droopy when he steps out the door to head to work.

Last year, Rain's world tour did not go smoothly. For the stop in Shanghai, it was because of various reasons that there were repeated delays and overuse of advertising resources. But the North American tour, which consisted of stops in Canada, LA, Hawaii and others, was canceled and this unexpectedly brought in a lawsuit from an American music company that would not allow Rain to use that particular stage name. In the middle of it all things got messy, and although Rain had nothing to do with it, the battle between good and evil was affecting his reputation, causing him much pain and grief. When he found out about the cancellation, Rain wept and because he had yet again failed to keep his promise of meeting his fans, he stayed at the concert venue for more than 40 minutes; wanting to look for an opportunity to say "I'm Sorry" to his fans. But even as Asia's "Son of Heaven", no matter how strong he has been, it is still difficult to utter any kind of words when faced with accusations as such.

Not long afterwards, Rain took on SATEC Corporation and established his very own J.Tune Entertainment. "J" is the English letter for his name. This company which has his marking all over it indicates that he is managing his own 'household' by being his own master. Will this then stop all those unfortunate and heart-wrenching matters from happening again?

Vielen Dank Phoenix, war echt interessant zu lesen!
Mir gefiel vor allem dieser Satz, der ihn beschrieb:
Whenever he protects his family, he is a man; but whenever he remembers his mother, he is still a child.
