Rain's press conference in Tokyo
As a singer/artistof course, and as an actor in dramas "Full House" and "Sangdoo, Let'sGo to School," he fascinates Asia with his multi-talent. Koreansuperstar Rain paid a sudden visit to Japan on the 18th of this month, and held a press conference at the Tokyo Dome Hotel. The purpose of theconference was to promote the May 25th Japan performance of the "Rain'sComing" World Tour, started on a record-breaking scale in December oflast year at the Seoul Olympic Stadium. Rain's proudly-presented"Rain's Coming" is one year of planning, a total cost of 38,000,000,000won (5,000,000,000 Japanese yen), 11 hours of dance lessons and 5 hoursof voice training daily for 3 months before the performance, anenormous 300 ton stage apparatus and 130 lights constructed by 200staff - a miraculous stage for 600,000 people mobilized at 35performances in 12 of the world's countries. Moreover, the stagedirection and choreography is headed by Madonna's "Confessions WorldTour" producer Jamie King. Video direction and production designerheavyweights from the American showbiz world were also appointed tothis masterpiece of a stage that will finally make its debut in Japan. At this conference , despite being last-minute, a fair number of massmedia fervently rushed over and a battle for information unfolded.
Assoon as he made his entrance, Rain, bathed in a storm of cameramen'sflashes, and with a slightly nervous expression, first gave a greetingin Japanese, "Everyone, hello. Thank you for coming. Hello." When themoderator asked if he had prepared his greeting in Japanese, hehonestly confessed that long ago he studied a little Japanese, but he'sbeen forgetting a bit recently due to having to remember variouscountries' languages.
His hopes for the Japan performance: hewants to make a stage that no one has seen so far, he wants tofascinate with new things, and once you see the awesome staging heprepared together with famous foreign staff, you won't be sorry! Askedabout his impressions of Japan, he happily answered, "I always want togo. Beautiful country." He likes sushi and hotsprings, and also said "Iwant to go to a typical hotspring." And then, expressing thanks to hiseternally supportive fans, he showed a warm smile and said, "I'mlooking forward to being able to meet everyone on May 25th."
Below are contents from a collection of the question and answer session.
Q: You've been to many places on your world tour, but what is your impression of each? Are there differences in each country?
A:As for world tours, famous American artists give big-scaleperformances, but I wasn't able to think of Asian artists as being ableto make it overseas. So, this time I think that my being able to dothis is fortunate, and I've prepared a lot personally. Also I've beenblessed with wonderful staff and equipment, and think of it as verylucky. So far, starting with Korea, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc., I've been around each country, but since I've given my all likenever before in preparing for this concert, I feel support given me byenthusiastic fans in every place. In the case of Japan now, since thedrama "Full House" is being broadcast and I've met everyone beforehandthrough drama, this time I definitely want to show people a new side -I'm hoping to do that through my Japan performance. All of you toodefinitely, please anticipate (my concert). I’m confident my concertwill meet everyone’s expectations, so I’m looking forward to meetingall of you in May.
Q: Why did you choose Tokyo Dome? Have you ever seen a performance or baseball game there before?
A:More than it being a “choice,” first of all I think to play in a domeis itself an honor, so I feel I have to do my best to prepare anappropriate concert. I’ve done (the performance) repeatedly, but I wantto prepare to meet everyone’s concert expectations and am putting in alot of effort, so please be sure to come. Also, having heard it’ll bethe first time for a Korean artist (to perform at the Dome), when Ithink about that, I feel I have to try my very best even more.
Q:I think you are busy with preparations for the concert, but do yourelax during the tour and have time to rest your heart? Also, in HongKong and Taiwan I think you receive attention from local stars, so doyou interact (with them)?
A: Before, when I came to Japan I wentbowling. In the pitch darkness, it was glittering and pretty, so Ithought, “This kind of place does exist...” and I started bowling. Eversince then, whatever country I’m in, it’s become a habit to go to abowling place. During those times, I’m able to let a little stress go,and I’ve wondered if that’s the connection to it becoming my hobby. Butno matter what country’s bowling place I go to, Japan’s is still thebest I think? (smiles)
Foreign artists often come to myperformances, but that’s not because I’m cool – they come to see mystage set. They know my stage set cost a lot of money, so they seem tobecome interested in “what on earth kind of stage is it?” Even so, whenthey come to see, they applaud for me and offer support, and thatbecomes encouragement – I think it's a great honor we’re able toconnect in that way, and from my heart I am thankful.
-End of Q&A-
Toeach and every one of the gathered reporters at this conference, Rainexpressed a feeling of gratitude: “to everyone who always runs coolpictures and good articles about me...” - and as if to say “write thisconference’s articles well too, ok!” he had presents of memo books andballpoint pens prepared for us.
