Rain Post NY Concert Special Interview - YTN News 06.02.06

Our headlines last week was of Korean Star, Rain, standing proudly on the stage of New York's Madison Square Garden. Other than reports on major press and papers, audiences are really looking forward to hearing more on Rain's performance in the US. We discuss this with Reporter Kim next.

Q: We hear from fans that Rain's performance in US concluded successfully. Is that true?

A: Of course it's true! More than five thousand fans joined Rain in his Madison Square Garden Concert on both the 2nd and 3rd February. That's more than 10,000 in turnout. I would say this is pretty good for his debut concert in the US.

Q: I understand NY Madison Square Garden is a place of great meaning?

A: Absolutely! NY Madison Square Garden is not a big concert venue, but the sound system facilities are great and more importantly, it is the heart of the US Pop with near to 100 years of history, and holds significant meaning. Only superstars like Michael Jackson can hold performances there. It is not a place where you can just pay to rent. You have to have attained a certain level of success! Rain did his best and completed his first performance there well.

Q: In celebration, we can certainly imagine the reactions of fans in the US. But how are local press reacting to this concert?

A: You mean New York Times which was the first to introduce Rain enthusiastically? It described Rain as the Justin Timberlake from Asia who successfully broke through cultural barrier in the reports of this Asian superstar. After the performance, the paper also had significant reports on the concert, giving Rain plenty of attention. I believe this is pretty good reaction.

There were come criticisms about Rain's concert in the report, but after 5 days, there were only reports of praises left, describing Rain as a fantastic dancer and a singer with plenty of potential. This are very encouraging evaluations for Rain who is in the US for the first time.

Rain also left a profound and meaningful impression of his performance. Using AP communication in US, we interview Rain on how he feels standing on the stage of NY Madison Square Garden for the first time, who hopes to break into the US market as of now. Let's hear what Rain and his producer, JY Park, has to say.

Rain's Interview:

Q: How does it feel standing on a stage in the US?

A: I'm so excited to have a concert at Madison Square Garden. I've been a big fan of many pop artistes since young. I was imitating all the dancers watching their LIVE performances. Like, one day, I was watching Michael Jackson performing at the Madison Square Garden. Then, I made up my mind that someday, I'll go up that stage and have a show. I made it, and it's big honour to me.

JY Park's Interview:

I use different styles when I write songs (in Korea and in the US). For Asians, I use music to get close to their heart. But when I produce songs for Americans, I have to know how to get close to their body. When Asians hear music they like, they go "Ah..". But when Americans hear music they like, they say "Good! Ver good!" loudly. This is the biggest difference.

Q: The first time I hear Rain responding in English during an interview. His pronunciation is really good! I understand he has been trying hard to learn English so as to enter the US market?

A: He practices once he has any free time in between his performances and promotional activities. This can be a very useful tool for breaking into the US market.

From Rain's producer JY Park, we can sense the differences between the US and Asian cultures. This is something he keeps in mind while composing songs. In fact, this seems to be the determining factor of whether Rain will succeed in the US market.

With the end of the 2-day concerts, we hear both encouraging as well as negative feedbacks about the performance from major US newspapers. For example, some say Rain's music and performance style is just a Korean version of the US pop music in the 90s. Others talk about his similarities to Usher, Michael Jackson etc.

In actual fact, JY Park is having a lot of headache determining the music style for Rain. It is no mean feat to shrug off the older style of pop and come up with a new music direction, and at the same time, preserving the presence of the Asian elements in the music.

Q: Rain has received many encouraging responses from the US market. Certainly, there are many areas which he still needs to improve on. Given the present circumstances, would you say that this performance is an indication that Rain has half made it in the US market?

A: Yes it is! In actual fact, Rain doesn't seem to have failing in the Asian market at all. Using this huge success to penetrate the US market has helped to elicit good response. His language ability still poses as a barrier, and the fact that his serial dramas are part of his overwhelming popularity. This is something very different to the US fans, who are exposed to the top pop cultures. To gain a wider fan base in the US, Rain will have to work very hard.

After his successful debut concerts in the NY heart of pop, Rain is planning to release his first English album this autumn. We look forward to his success. Thank you for viewing.
