Rain's Biography

Born on June 25, 1982, Rain was given the birth name Jeong JiHoon. His father was a businessman, while his mother operated a pastry store at home. He has one sister, Jeong HaNa, who is three years his junior.

As a child, JiHoon was often described as an introvert who hardly talks in class. However, all perception was changed during a school competition when he was in Primary 6. No one in his class had wanted to perform, so he took it upon himself and went onstage to dance for the very first time. Needless to say, the entire school body went up and applauded his impromptu performance. That was the beginning of his passion towards dancing.

He hung out with older schoolmates who shared this same passion. He endured endless bullying from older, bigger boys and literally lived off the streets just to fend on his passion and this experience built a solid foundation on JiHoon to remain determined to achieve his dream.

In 1998, at age 16, JiHoon joined a 6-member boy band called Fan Club. Their first single, "Search For A Dream" (a remake of Chumbawamba's hit song "Thumbthumping"), became a hit. However, the band disbanded shortly after they waxed their 2nd album.

JiHoon continued dancing in clubs with his friends and at the same time, auditioned for various entertainment companies which ended up rejecting him mainly for his looks. They pronounced him "ugly" due to his single eyelids. But the boy never gave up. About 30 auditions later, he signed up to audition for JYP Entertainment. This turned out to be his career breakthrough, but this breakthrough did not come easily. When he first met up with JYPE CEO Park Jin Young, he was asked to dance for 5 hours non-stop. When he passed the audition, he had to undergo a rigorous two-year training under Park's meticulous supervision.

Around the same time, JiHoon suffered what is considered his biggest blow in life: His mother became seriously ill from diabetes complications. Meanwhile, his father's business failed and he ran away to Brazil to seek greener pasteurs, leaving to JiHoon the responsibility of taking care of his unwell mother and his little sister. With no money on his pocket, JiHoon sometimes had to walk because he had no money for bus fares or would starve for days because he cannot buy food. Today, he fondly remembers those days as a reminder of what he had to endure in pursuit of his dream.

While under the tutelage of JYPE, he became a back-up dancer for Park Jin Young and later on, as choreographer and dance partner for then-JYPE top artist Park Ji Yeon. At the same time, JYPE trained him for voice and acting in preparation for a solo career.

Finally, on April 24, 2002, he made his debut performance as a solo artist, performing his first single, "Nappeun Namja" (Bad Guy) on the KMTV program Show Music Tank under the stage name Bi (RAIN). They chose this stage name for him because according to Park, he detects a certain kind of sadness that reminds him of rain pouring down the sky whenever he watches JiHoon dance.

Meanwhile, just a few weeks before the debut album was released, JiHoon's mother's illness became worse and worse. Park Jin Young took it upon himself to take care of Mrs. Jeong's hospitalization while JiHoon was busy waxing his debut album. However, she was not able to witness her son's debut performance as she passed away in December 2001.

Rain's first album sold more than 140,000 units despite the carrier single's failure to immediately catch the attention of Korean audiences because it was released at the height of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. But Rain didn't give up. On his suggestion, they released a second single, "Annyeong Ir Ah Mal Dae Shin" (Instead of Saying Goodbye), which turned out to be a bigger hit and has created a trend with Rain's dance steps used in the song. At year-end, Rain bagged Best New Artist at the KBS Music Awards.

In 2003, JYPE gave Rain the opportunity to have a direct involvement on creating his second album. Rain designed the concept and choreography for the song "How To Avoid The Sun", the carrier single off his second album. It became a huge hit, cementing his place in Korean pop music as an A-lister. At the same time, a new facet of his artistry was put to test when he made his official acting debut in the KBS Drama "SangDoo-ya, Hakkyo Ka-Ja" (SangDoo, Let's Go To School) opposite Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Dong Gun. The drama had consistently good ratings, as audiences marveled at how such a young man with very little acting experience was able to portray the role of a young single parent so convincingly.

2004 marked the beginning of Rain's status as a World Star. Aside from grabbing the opportunity to perform overseas, Rain co-starred opposite Song Hye Kyo in the top-rating drama "Full House". The drama eventually became a consistent hit all over Asia with record ratings in Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and just recently, China. It made Rain a household name all over the continent and paved the way for him to jumpstart an international career.

In October 2004, he released his third album "It's Raining". It became his most successful album to date, with sales of over one million copies in Korea and overseas. Such a remarkable feat earned him Hallyu (Korean wave) status by the end of 2004, with awards in both acting and singing being bestowed unto him. He won the most coveted award for music, the Daesang Award, at the 2004 KBS Music Awards.

2005 proved to be a busy year for Rain. In January 2005, Rain staged his first major concert, Rainy Day, via a two-night show in Seoul and Pusan cities. At the same time, "Full House" has been airing in several countries in Asia and in North America. An accompanying DVD of the concert was released later on, which spread out overseas and made his international fans clamor to see him live. This prompted JYPE to bring the Rainy Day concerts all over Asia and the USA, starting with Japan in July 2005, and ending in Thailand in February 2006. The concert amassed record-breaking ticket sales, with the most expensive ones being sold out in a matter of minutes.

On this same year, Rain starred in another KBS Drama, "I Jukil Numoi Sarang" (A Love To Kill) opposite Shin Min Ah. His acting was highly commended due to the depth of emotions he showed particularly in tragic scenes. The drama was also aired in countries like Taiwan and the Philippines. He won the Netizen Award at the year-end KBS Drama Awards, and the drama itself won Best Screenplay at the 2006 Asian TV Awards.

Rain also became a certified international star when he bagged the grandslam at all MTV Awards in Asia, the highlight being his performance at MTV Asia Aid opposite some of the world's top artists. This recognition earned him the invitation to attend the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, Florida. He was also invited to perform at the halftime show of a Manchester United football match in Japan.

Rain's star continued to shine in 2006 when he staged his first major concert in the USA via two sold-out performances at New York's Madison Square Garden Theater, with no less than hip-hop music mogul P.Diddy in attendance. He also made an appearance at MTV's Total Request Live and became the subject of articles published in major dailies such as the New York Times. Such attention in the US eventually garnered him his highest honor to date, the inclusion in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2006.

Rain also became one of the most sought-after product endorsers in Asia starting in 2006, having bagged prized CF contracts for big companies like LG, Giordano, Pepsi and BMW. In 2007, he signed up as an image model for Nikon and Unilever, making him the highest paid Unilever model in Asia. He also models clothes and apparel for top designers such as Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren. He also became the spokesman for the Korean Tourism Authority, with his commercial feature titled "Korea Sparkling" being aired in worldwide cable channels such as CNN.

Around March 2006, award-winning film director Park Chan Wook (Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) offered Rain to star in his first comedy feature, "Cyborg Jiman, Kwenchana" (I'm A Cyborg, But It's OK). Rain was his original choice to star in this movie. Ignoring budget constraints, Rain immediately accepted the offer, stating that the opportunity to work with and learn from an accomplished filmmaker like Park was something he cannot pass on.

Rain's feature film debut opened in Korea on December 7, 2006, and was released internationally in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but consistently praised Rain and co-star Im Soo Jung's acting performance. Rain won Best New Actor at the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Overseas Popularity Award at the Daejeong Awards for his performance in the film. The film was in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it bagged the Alfred Bauer Prize. It was also featured at the Hong Kong International Film Festival where Rain and ISJ garnered Best Actor/Actress nominations.

By mid-2006, Rain started intense preparations for the release of his 4th album and his upcoming World Tour concerts. Fans eagerly anticipated for these as preparations were very well kept under wraps. The 4th album, "Rain's World", and Rain's Coming World Tour were launched on October 13, 2006 via an elaborate showcase held at Jamsil Olympic Stadium in Seoul, with an international audience totalling almost 40,000 in attendance - an unprecedented feat in Korean music history. Everyone gasped in awe at the excellent stage production, as well as Rain's new manly image depicted in the album. Needless to say, the album sold more than 100,000 units in Korea by year-end despite being in the market for only roughly three months.

On December 15, 2006, Rain kicked-off his World Tour via a two-night concert in Seoul, South Korea, and followed it up with another two-night show one week later at The Colosseum in Las Vegas, USA. More concerts followed in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, Thailand, Sydney, Australia and at Japan's Tokyo Dome, which raked in 42,000 audiences. The show got consistently good reviews even from the most picky critics. Unfortunately, the tour hit a snag when production problems marred by cancellations and lawsuits in the US caused the tour to end on a sour note. At present, it is not certain whether the tour would resume in the future.

Aside from the movie and the tour, Rain again garnered international recognition when he was included in People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People for 2007. He was also voted No.1 by netizens at the online version of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2007, beating the likes of American talk show host Stephen Colbert, U2's Bono and Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Colbert, in an attempt to put humor at his "loss", parodied Rain's music video for the song "How To Avoid The Sun" on his show, prompting Korean media to cry 'foul' at the stunt and fans rejoicing at Rain's first mainstream US television exposure.

Another milestone in Rain's career happened in 2007 when he bagged a supporting role in the Warner Bros. production of "Speed Racer", based on the Japanese anime Mach Go-Go, directed by the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix trilogy). Rain will be portraying the role of Taejo Togokhan, a racer who is out to avenge the honor of his family. The movie is set to be out in theaters in May 2008.

Rain ended 2007 with a bang by receiving the Best Male Asian Artist Award for 2007 from the CineAsia Awards in Macau.

With the expiration of his management contract with JYP Entertainment in May 2007, Rain is now gearing towards managing his career independently through the establishment of his own company, J.Tune Entertainment. At present, he is in talks with agents and producers in the US for his first all-English album and possibly a lead role in another Hollywood movie.

Singer. Dancer. Actor. Model. World Star. With his motto, "Endless effort, endless endurance, endless modesty", Jeong JiHoon, now known all over the world as Rain, is destined for bigger and brighter things.

Biographie

“He’s sold millions of CD’s all over Asia. He has sung and danced in front of tens of thousands of screaming Fans in Seoul, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo – even in Las Vegas and New York. As an actor, he has starred in hit television shows and a movie by art-house favorite Park Chan-wook, not to mention his appearance in the Wachowsky brothers’ Speed Racer blockbuster. He has even ‚feuded’ with Comedy Central mock newsman extraordinaire Stephen Colbert. He is the performer known as ‚Rain’, and he is the biggest international star yet to emerge from the Korean entertainment industry.“
Aus “The Reign of Rain“, einem Kapitel des Buches „Pop Goes Korea – Behind the Revolution in Movies, Music, and Internet Culture“ von Mark James Russell; Berkeley 2008; S. 146

비 (=Bi = Regen) zulegte.
